Denstone College Prep School at Smallwood Manor had an extremely special guest in the shape of local boy Adam Peaty MBE. Peaty is currently the World Record Holder in 50m and 100m breaststroke and he made history at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games becoming the first member of Team GB to take gold in Brazil but also the first male Olympic Champion in the pool since 1988, as he won the Men’s 100m Breaststroke title.

He bought several medals including his Olympic Gold medal and some of the children were lucky enough to try it for size! He was happy to answer a plethora of questions from both pupils and staff. Headmaster Jerry Gear said, “Adam told us that he had a team of 15 people working with him to help him to stay at the top of the tree, including a psychologist, dietician, trainer and computer analysers who are constantly assessing his stroke. It is this attention to detail that helps to ensure that he is consistently ahead of the pack. He went on to add that for children two hours swimming a week was more than enough, that rest is a really important part of training and how suffering the occasional disappointment in a race helped to spur him on to even greater things. It was a real pleasure to meet him and I for one could easily have listened to him for hours. He pitched the answers to all of the questions at just the right level for the children and it really was inspiring to listen to him.”

“We were very lucky to have him visit as he has an extremely busy training schedule. We hope the children enjoyed his visit and that they were inspired by such a driven, friendly and ambitious chap!” said Marketing Manager, Emma Warrilow.
