Typical Media Working Day
Journalists typically start work between 7.00 am and 10.00 am (depending upon whether they are representing a morning or evening newspaper) and leave from around 3.30 pm to 7.00 pm depending on deadlines.
Generally:
- Morning daily newspaper journalists research stories in the morning during the day before publication
- Afternoon daily newspaper journalists research stories in the afternoon during the day before publication
- Sunday newspaper journalists research stories on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
- Journalists on weekly trade publications, with a mid-week publication, research stories on Fridays and Mondays
- Broadcast journalists work to the specific timings of their media outlets/shows on TV or radio, with radio news desks working to hourly bulletins on the hour in any 24 hour period/7 days a week or on a lunchtime/evening basis for regional TV news and on an ongoing basis for 24 hour rolling TV/radio/online news. Radio producers will cover activity for dedicated shows with particularly popular slots at breakfast/lunchtime and evening drive-time or for specific phone-in/feature shows throughout other parts of the day
- The best time to talk to journalists about story ideas, stories and meetings is typically during the time they research stories so don’t be afraid to find out what suits them best
