Athletes from King’s College competed in the recent Somerset Combined Event Championship at the Bill Whistlecroft Arena in Yeovil and proved themselves to be outstanding competitors.

At the recent Somerset Combined Event Championship, King’s College athletes set several personal bests across a number of disciplines.

Fourth Form Darcie C competed in the U17 (Fourth and Fifth Form) heptathlon. This was Darcie’s first heptathlon with seven events over two days. On day one, Darcie performed very well across the four events earning personal bests in the 80m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot and 200m. Her second day was consistent with good performances in the Long Jump and 800m, and a personal best in the Javelin. At the end of the competition, her 800m run gained her three places and she finished third for Somerset and 16th overall in the U17 Heptathlon.

In the U15 pentathlon on Sunday, Third Former Emily M and Olivia T competed over five events – 75m Hurdles, Shot, High Jump, Long Jump and 800m. Both Emily and Olivia set personal bests in the hurdles and shot with Olivia gaining one in the high jump and Emily in the long jump. Unfortunately, Olivia withdrew from the 800m but had worked hard the whole day. Emily was tenth going into the 800m and gave everything she had in the 800m, setting the third fastest time which jumped her up the rankings to finish sixth overall and second for Somerset in the U15 Pentathlon.

King’s athletics coach, Steve Shaw, commented: “Watching our young athletes demonstrate exceptional dedication and talent at this event was truly inspiring. Darcie’s remarkable performance in her first heptathlon, Emily’s tenacity in the pentathlon and Olivia’s personal best are all testaments to their hard work and commitment to their sport.

“We are incredibly proud of them and hope they have the opportunity to represent Somerset at the Regional event in June. No matter the outcome, they’ve already proven themselves to be outstanding athletes and role models for their peers.”

Talented King’s College athletes join the King’s Multi-Sport Academy where they benefit from top-level coaching from former pentathlete Lydia Rivet, and train with other young adults across the region. Having competed in Modern Pentathlon from grass roots through to world class level, Lydia has an in-depth understanding of the sport and training requirements for athletes at different levels, and over the years, King’s pupils have achieved huge success in Modern Pentathlon.

Darcie and Emily are now waiting to hear if they will be selected to represent Somerset at the Regional event at the end of June.
