King’s College Upper Sixth pupil Flora Davies won the prestigious Taunton Young Singer competition, as part of the Taunton Festival of Arts. The event is open to under 18-year-olds and pupils took part from King’s Bruton, Blundell’s and Wellington School, as well as other schools in the area.

Flora, taught by Naomi Harvey, and accompanied on the piano by Oliver Ridley, presented a demanding programme including Schumann’s Widmung, He shall Feed his Flock from Handel’s Messiah, When I am Laid in Earth from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and Roger Quilter’s passionate Love’s Philosophy.

The adjudicator, opera singer Gaynor Keeble, praised Flora, a former Salisbury Cathedral chorister, for the quality of her vocal control and the intensity of her emotional engagement. This prestigious award came with a cash prize of £300 which Flora intends to use towards her gap year fund when she hopes to spend some time working at King’s College India.
