A strong year group of Fifth Form students at King’s College has been celebrating an outstanding set of GCSE results this week. The school’s overall percentage of grades A*, A, 9, 8 and 7 (equivalent to the old A*s and As) was 59%, with a pass rate of 99.6%.

Eight pupils achieved the extraordinary feat of achieving ten grades at A*, 9 or 8 (equivalent to the old A*s). They were Louis B, Michael B, Florence C, Max C-S, Malaika N, James R, Amelie R and Anastasia W. Six of these top performers joined King’s College from our prep school, King’s Hall. Two of these, Amelie and Michael, each gained two A*s and eight 9s – a full sweep of top grades.

A further eight pupils achieved eight or nine grades at the A*, 9 or 8 level. These include Lara S, who joined the school from Germany at the beginning of the Fifth Form and made the most of the King’s accelerated GCSE programme, gaining straight 9s and an A* in all eight of the subjects she studied.

Individual departments which did particularly well this year, measured by the percentage of grades A*, A, 9, 8, and 7, included Chemistry (67%), Drama (76%), Design Technology (63%), French (71%), German (85%), History (63%), Latin (88%), Mathematics (71%), Physics (72%), Philosophy (64%), Spanish (70%) and Textiles (75%).

Headmaster, Richard Biggs, commented “I am delighted that a strong year group of GCSE candidates has been appropriately rewarded with an excellent set of grades. We took a great deal of care over the production of these grades, and believe they are a fair reflection of the abilities and the hard work of a very talented group of young men and women.

It is good to see the successes spanning a wide range of subjects, from sciences to arts, from performing arts to languages. In fact our growing reputation for excellence in performing arts has been underlined by very strong grades in music, drama and, for the first time this year, in dance, all of which achieved over 60% at grades 9, 8 and 7.

The great majority of this strong cohort will be staying on into the King’s College Sixth Form, to be joined by over 40 new students from the UK and abroad. That promises to be a vibrant and successful year group, and we expect great things of them over the coming two years, both in and out of the classroom.

I congratulate our year 11 students and their teachers for another outstanding set of GCSE grades. I particularly want to thank the students for throwing themselves wholeheartedly into the remote learning programme we put in place last term. They engaged with real interest in the pre-A level and BTEC courses we provided in the second half of term, and are, I am sure, now looking forward to returning to school in September and getting stuck into the real thing!”

Sixth Form places for September are now full. For details about entry in 2021, please contact: Admissions@kings-taunton.co.uk/01823 328204.
