Denstone College Prep School at Smallwood Manor near Marchington in Staffordshire has had their most successful period academically in the long history of the school with pupils being awarded a total of 71 scholarships over the course of the last 4 years. This is a phenomenal achievement with some pupils being awarded 2 or 3 scholarships and exhibitions each to their secondary school of choice.

Furthermore, in the past three years, two boys who joined the School towards the end of Year 5 or the beginning of Year 6, managed to increase their marks by over 30% in six months in one case & six weeks in another in order to pass their entrance exams to their first choice school!

2018 – 22 Year Six pupils – 21 scholarships and exhibitions were awarded. The average score attained by the pupils was an amazingly high 78%, 7% higher than last year’s average. Three pupils achieved an average score of over 90%, with two of them averaging a staggering 98%, which in one case included a mark of 100% in the science exam.

2017 – 32 Year Six pupils – 18 scholarships and exhibitions were awarded. The average score attained by the pupils was a very decent 71%, with one child being awarded 3 scholarships in art, music and academia.

2016 – 24 Year Six pupils – 14 scholarships and exhibitions were awarded. The average score attained by the pupils was a very impressive 74%, with some pupils achieving almost full marks in order to be awarded an academic scholarship.

2015 – 26 Year 6 pupils – 18 scholarships & exhibitions were awarded, with an average mark in their entrance exams of 73%. As is always the case, the awards were spread between academia, sport, music, art and drama, with a number of all-rounders’ awards encompassing two of these and academia. Six of these awards were academic scholarships, with a further three being academic exhibitions.
The exam entrance procedure can be particularly challenging for pupils, consisting of English, Maths and Science papers and an interview with a senior member of staff at Denstone College, but Denstone College Prep’s ability to prepare these children for the exams is showing itself in these remarkable results.

In addition, pupils can be assessed on their music, art, drama or sporting abilities and, if successful, will receive scholarships or exhibitions.

Headmaster Jerry Gear said “We are absolutely delighted with these results that actually breaks the record for the most awards achieved in a single year and in any four year period in the School’s prestigious history. What gives me the most pleasure is that these awards are spread between so many different areas of education. We are passionate about providing a genuine breadth of educational experiences for our children and these awards recognise this.”
